The Future Memory Heartbreak Junction: Diptych
Sensual and cinematic, The future memory heartbreak
junction: diptych is an analysis of
archetypes surrounding fatal love, the ecstatic psyche of performer, and the
pleasure/pain reflex. This work exposes the compulsive nature of the heart, the
blind-siding effects of love, and the heartbreak of loyalty within loss.
The solo reveals a torch singer, a woman trapped in a
mysterious landscape reliving a lifetime of heartbreaks and triumphs. A
detailed character study and an exploration of repetition, the solo is, quite
simply, a tour de force from Sasha Ivanochko, one of Canada’s most accomplished
performer/choreographers. The duet introduces another character, the singer’s
heartbreak man, performed by the outstanding Brendan Wyatt.
Ivanochko’s initial questioning approaching the creation of
the duet surrounded the idea of perspective. The solo tells the story of the
woman. Or does it? By introducing the heartbreak man and referring to the
structure of the solo, the duet explodes the assumptions made by the audience
in watching the solo.
Dancing and singing through the surreal landscape of
future memory, Ivanochko and Wyatt’s performances are hot, chemical and
unabashedly beautiful. This is a dual portrait of Love: as the Stuff of Life
and the Dark Night of the Soul. |

Heaven The gasp of breath, the surprising slap of flesh against flesh, and the stamp of foot to floor, sounds the body’s vulnerability and power- this is the score of “Heaven”. Deeply physical, “Heaven” is Ivanochko’s most explicit example of movement as metaphor for heart and mind. Starting from the idea that heaven is the ultimate place of union and love, this work explores the biological and emotional urgency of mating and the dissolution of self in the other. Stripped of clothing, the dancers’ bodies speak with an economy and sexuality that impacts viscerally. Naked, thematically and dramatically, this piece startles and seduces with its primal imagery and heart breaking honesty. Performed by Sasha Ivanochko, Louis Laberge-Côté, and Brodie Stevenson. Lighting design by Geoff Bouckley.

Is This Love
Tranquil and cool, “Is this love?” is a non-linear exploration of the mortality of the moment. Made up of fleeting gestures and sustained postures, this spare work describes a neat fluidity of space and time and the human experience of it. With a physicality that is understated and raw, Ivanochko's performance approach is transparent and emotionally revealing. Like a woman trying on clothes, Ivanochko embraces shape and form, only to let them fall away before picking up another, and another. This quiet, strong work impacts the audience with a sense of immediacy and timelessness. Lighting design by Geoff Bouckley and score by Catherine Thompson.

Perfect Pretty
Perfect Pretty is a non-stop 26-minute solo for dancer/choreographer Sasha Ivanochko. Set to a soaring original score by Gilles Goyette, the piece is a snap shot of a teetering life on the edge. Set in an oppressively cheery three-sided room designed by James Robertson, this solo rages. Lurching and careening, prancing and preening, this physical character study explores aspects of liberty, madness and the human will to life. Characterized by Miss Ivanochko’s extreme and dramatic physicality, Perfect Pretty is bizarre, tragic and deeply thoughtful.

Brute
A gift from Peggy Baker, Canada’s leading lady of modern dance, through the Choreographer’s Trust, “Brute” is a thirty-minute tour de force set to Prokofiev’s monumental Sonata No. 6. Choreographed by Baker in 1994, "Brute" is a dramatic and virtuosic piece for piano and solo dancer. Inspired in part by Picasso’s “Guernica”, “Brute” holds a cherished place of honor in Ivanochko’s repertoire, being the only work choreographed by another artist. Lighting Design by Marc Parent and costume Design by Caroline O’Brien. |
